A little Winter Sun is Never Far Away

We know how much you love the UK, we really do!

But here at the Backpacker Herald we are also very aware that if possible, everybody would like a short break away this winter to escape the cold and dark nights.

So, with this in mind we have come up with just a few ideas for places you could head to this winter for that all important sunny break.

Don’t forget to send us a postcard!

Egypt

Egypt is very hot and dry throughout most of the year. The best time to visit Egypt is during the winter and spring, which is when the weather is at its most pleasant. However, be aware that a few parts of the country suffer from heavy rain and very cold weather during these seasons, so select your destination accordingly. When in Egypt, try to visit Cairo, the capital of Egypt. In Cairo, you’ll find the world-famous Giza Pyramids and the Egyptian Museum, two must-see attractions. One great way to see the country is to take a cruise on the Nile from Aswan to Luxor. If you’re into scuba diving, then you’re in the right country; the Red Sea has some of the best dive locations on the planet.

Cyprus

Cyprus has mild winters and warm springs. During the winter, some parts of Cyprus are pleasantly warm while other parts are snowy enough for skiing. Cyprus is one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean Sea for a reason; rent a car and drive along the stunningly beautiful coastline of the island to find out that reason for yourself. If you’re interested in a more authentic Cyprus experience than you’d find at a Cypriot resort hotel, be sure to visit Nicosia, also known as Lefkosia, the capital of Cyprus. Two popular things to do in Nicosia include visiting the Turkish bath at Hamam Omerye and going shopping along Ledra Street.

Malta

Malta is one of the sunniest countries in Europe; if you’re looking to escape the gloomy and dark British winters, then this is definitely the place to be. Malta may be small, but it’s got a lot to offer. The country is an archipelago composed of many islands, but only the three largest islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino are inhabited. You can get a great view of Malta by visiting Mdina, a fortress located in the town of Rabat. If you’re into snorkeling or scuba diving, Malta is the perfect place thanks to its pleasant water temperatures and high visibility throughout the year. Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are a popular winter getaway thanks to their pleasantly warm winters. People love visiting Gran Canaria, the most heavily populated island, due to its lovely beaches, excellent surfing, spectacular mountain scenery and superb scuba diving. If you’re into windsurfing, visit the island of Fuerteventura, and if you’re into walking, make sure to visit the island of La Gomera, home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Garajonay National Park and other amazing locations best explored on foot.
